Recipe for cutting board wax. If you find your oil wax too hard to apply heat it gently until it becomes softer. Before you start melting wax add enough water to the pot so that the water level is about 1 2 below the top of your melting container. Now we have wax to oil a ratio of 1 4.
After applying several coats of mineral to your cutting board finish with a coat or two of this oil wax mixture. Let the wax melt. I also used a funnel just for canning and it worked perfectly.
Rub on a small amount with a clean lint free cloth and buff to a shine. All of the wax should have melted into the oil combining into a golden translucent liquid. We like to use at least 1 3 carnauba wax.
This allows the board to soak up as much of the mineral oil as it can and leaves the wax behind on the surface to solidify. I preferred using a large glass measuring cup with a pour spout as i was going to be pouring the combined liquid into a whole bunch of small jars. After 10 minutes turn off the heat but leave the pot on the stove.
The warmth of your hands will melt the board butter into the wood. Pour 400 ml of food safe mineral oil into the cup add chopped wax or pellet wax slowly until the oil and wax mixture reaches 500 ml. You can go ahead and crank it up but be sure to turn the heat down before the water starts to boil.
You can use 100 beeswax or 50 beeswax and 50 carnauba wax. As the wax melts use the chopsticks to break up the large pieces helping them to melt more quickly. Most recipes include heating the wax in a mid size ball jar in hot water and adding warmed mineral oil to the wax once it is melted.
